Wind Ensemble is the highest of the three bands at the high school. Concert Band (for all the freshmen), Symphonic band (some freshmen, lots of sophomores, some juniors and this year one senior-Brent XD *palmface*), and Wind Ensemble (very few sophomores, lots of juniors, and all the seniors - except for Brent XD *double palmface*). Auditions for Wind Ensemble were held a few weeks before the POPS concert which was just two weeks before the last day of school and the list of chairs in WE and SB were posted the day after the Concert. So on the day Ms. Garcia put the list up Aubrey (Clarinet) comes to me at lunch and says "YOU MADE WIND ENSEMBLE!!!!!!" and I start FLIPPING OUT cause I'm so happy right? And THEN she says "I think you're second chair!" and I'm like "Whaaaaat? But if Rae is first chair then that means I beat Eric!" And we all know impossible that is because we all know eric is spectacular and he was also first chair of Symphonic Band this year (I was first chair of Concert Band). So I go to the band room to see if this is really actually the truth (this is after the dizziness subsided) and the list is posted outside the door, and sure enough, the list for WE says:
Rae Carlson - Trombone
Lainey Lee - Trombone
Eric Powell - Trombone
Jacob Weiss - Bass Trombone
So I start hyperventillating cause I'm so shocked and excited and happy surprised and proud of myself and I'm like !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! because Eric is my best friend and I knew right from that moment that things were going to be sooo awkward between us. So now, like I thought, things are awkward, BUT we both faced it upfront and were truthful with each other about how we felt and he said that he is going to challenge me next year (or is it this year? I'm not sure yet...) but you know what? I'm confident that I am going to win the challenge because I got my chair with my tenor trombone (my only trombone), while he has an F attachment which means he can play the C which is normally played in sixth position in first now because of the extra tubing (hense the F attachment) and he can also hit lower notes too because the low F is in sixth and the attachment lets you play it in first so you can keep going out so you can (in theory) play a low B natural below the staff. Well, I don't have an F attachment so I had to play all the Cs in sixth position instead of in first, and there were plenty of Cs in the audition piece. SOOOOO if he had a slacker instrument and STILL placed below me, I am confident that I can maintain my position and be the best at it. I will do my utmost BEST to impress Ms. Garcia. Rae already believes in me and she will be a senior next year (I will be a sophomore like Eric), so that's also something to look forward too. I'm hoping Rae and I will grow closer as friends this - or is it next - year (we certainly had a blast doing the musical last - or is it still this - year). SO LETS ALL HAVE HOPES THAT I WON'T SCREW UP AND DISSAPOINT EVERYONE :D
